I really love your work. I've never been able to visualize my world like this. How do you do it? Any tips?

I use reference. In this case I used the Matopas in Botswana as an inspiration for the vertical rock piles, and then figured out what they would look like from above. If you understand the structure you're drawing then you have a much better chance of conveying that information to the viewer.

So it's worth sketching regularly as that will help to get a sense of how things look from different angles. Then whenever you have an idea for a new location you should find a similar real structure that you can use as reference.

Thanks alot. :) I am envious of your skill. I've never been able to realize things spacially and stay motivated. I tend to get frusterated and leave maps as sketches.

Have you come across the Cartographers' Guild? [link] It's a great community that is very good a constructive feedback and motivation. Definitely worth starting a WIP thread over there for a map and working through it.

Yep, I'm glad I got to do something a little different with this and go with a savannah feel.

Ooh, loving the line work, the rock formations and riverbanks have a great organic feel to them. And I must learn to pdf a map.

Thanks!

I find that a combination of the pdf save output of Photoshop, the program pdf split and merge (pdfsam) and posterazor do the trick.

Glad you like it!

Thanks :) It was a challenge to create such a 3D environment with these high spires of rock in the savannah without going to an isometric view. I'm really pleased with the result. I now want to get a poster map and use it as a battlemap for a tribal camp siege :)

Thanks guys. I really appreciate it. I was having a shot at a more watercolour approach with this one and I think it paid off.
