World Of Ice And Fire by torstan World Of Ice And Fire by torstan
Last year I was commissioned to illustrate 12 24" by 36" maps of the world of George RR Martin's Lands of Ice and Fire. Here's the first ever official map of the Known World. I'll be posting more maps and some of the details over the coming month. Today - the known world: [link]

Yep, it's vast. I was amazed to find out how little of the continent even Daenarys had explored.

How much freedom did they give you for this? I've read that some cities only show up on your map and not anywhere in the books, did you create them?

Also are you going to make more maps so we can see what's east of the great waste, the rest of ulthos and sothoryos?

P.S fantastic work going to buy the map collection book now because of these great maps.

I'm afraid not. I'm contractually limited to these images for portfolio use only. The only way to see the full resolution image is to pick up the poster...

There's some full resolution detail views over on my site (link above)

I've just noticed that you labeled an area "Ghiscar". I thought the Ghiscari were from Ghis? If there is a New Ghis, isn't there an old one?

Yep, there's both an old and a new Ghis on the map.

Assuming that there is still a good deal of land beyond this to the east and south, this must be a rather large planet.

Very nice. I have this one hanging up on my wall. :) What would the dimensions be for something like this in photoshop?

Each of these were 12600 by 8400 pixels, created at 350dpi.

Glad you like them! I've got North of the Wall hanging on my wall at home.

Cool, thanks for the info. :) My own map for my story is getting rather large each iteration... Any tips on keeping large maps in a smaller file size?

The best thing to do is to flatten the layers regularly. I created the illustration in one file, and then all the details like roads, icons and text in another. Then I could change the background image in one file and drop it in behind the text and labeling in the other file. That helps to keep the filesize under control.

I admire your skills as an illustrator and a cartographer — this map, along with some others of the same realms — is available for purchase as a collection at my local Coles bookstore and I'm dying to get my hands on it!

The product is a set of 12 poster maps - all illustrated by me - and you can get them in bookstores. It's called the Lands of Ice and Fire, and you can also pick it up on Amazon: [link]

It is indeed. It's more commonly known as A Game of Thrones; this is what the popular TV series is based on :)
